First Impressions

I arrived in the middle of the night, so the area around the hotel looked and sounded much different. It was Friday, pay day, and the last pay day of the month. Lines at the ATM to cash paychecks. From the taxi, I witnessed a small motorcycle that t-boned into the side of a car. People all in the street. A lot of neon lights. The bass was thumping all night until 4AM.

By now the first five of us arrived and we came down to breakfast in the hotel lobby. We instantly recognized each other and knew each other's names from the months of video conferences we'd had in prior months.

We took a walk outside and we were wearing the heat and humidity in minutes. Dripping.

People use umbrellas even when it is not raining to shield the heat.

Jeepneys were lined every major street. It was a little early for them to be out.
